According to the view of the Masai people in Kenya, vegetables and fibres
are food for cows. They themselves drink half a gallon of Zebu milk each
day and their parties are sheer orgies of meat. On such occasions several
pounds of meat per person is not unusual.
In spite of that the cholesterol of the Masai tribesmen
is among the lowest ever measured in the world, about fifty percent of
the value of the average American and they never get diabetes. Similar,
shepherds in Somalia eat almost nothing but milk from their camels. About
a gallon and a half a day is normal, which amounts to almost one pound
of butter fat, because camel's milk is much fatter than cow's milk. But
although more than sixty percent of their energy consumption comes from
animal fat, and diabetes is not known among them.
In the postabsorptive state, the blood glucose concentration in humans varies
between 80 and 100 mg/dL (4.4 and 5.5 mmol/L). After the ingestion of a
carbohydrate meal, it may rise to 120 - 130 mg/dL (6.7 - 7.2 mmol/L). During
fasting, the level fails to around 60 - 70 mg/dl (3.3 - 3.9 mmol/L).
Under normal circumstances, the level is controlled within these limits.
The blood glucose level in ruminants is considerably lower, being approximately
40 mg/dL (2.2 mmol/L) in sheep and 60 mg/dL (3.3 mmol/L) in cattle. These
lower normal levels appear to he associated with the fact that ruminants
ferment virtually all dietary carbohydrate to lower (volatile) fatty acids,
and these largely replace glucose as the main metabolic fuel of the tissues
in the fed condition. |

I am 41 y. o. I have had diabetes since the age of 7. The disease has caused
a lot of damage to my body. For the last 6 years I have had hypertension
which at times exceeded 220/120 even though I took medication. The medical
practitioner told me that this hypertension is caused by pathological changes
in my kidneys which resulted from the diabetes.
I have been on the optimal diet for almost 4 months.
When I started my daily dose of insulin was up to 76 units. Progressively
I have been reducing the dose. At present I am on 25 units a day, but for
the last 4 days my blood sugar has been too low, so I will have to decrease
the dose of insulin.
I have lost 14 kg in weight and the hypertension
has vanished ... Until now I could not believe that I could cure myself
from diabetes, but now I think that it will happen soon.
